There are things, many as you can see that will end up either in the ocean or landfill waste… That’s just one week of collecting my home waste. Have you done #futuristicfebruary? I recommend you do. It will awaken your consciousness to do better and start slowly toward positive change for you and your loved ones.

This initiative was started by Sustainable Duo. This is my first year doing this, and I’m going to be honest. I’ve been so overwhelmed but at the same time, it has made me take serious actions and teach my two toddlers. As an environmentalist, I’m book smart but they never teach us how to take action or how to reduce our ecological footprint. We were taught how to report facts, research and how to write understandable scientific reports that can clearly demonstrate; that it is our actions which is causing climate change.

Thanks to this challenge, I’m able to use my knowledge and learn through a supportive and lovely community how to start changing my surroundings and encourage others to do the same.

My mother never had the opportunity to teach me this, however, every chance she got in Dominican republic she would say : “Open the tap water and use it, but do not leave it running!”, “Never throw garbage in the beach, we always bring an extra bag for garbage”, “Don’t waste your food, if you are not going to eat it, let’s pack it and give it to someone whos hungry near the beach”.

These little comments and life lessons have stayed with me forever. She would do the most she can in front of me, and she would never force me or make me do what I didn’t want to do. However, she was a master of showing me and letting me decide for myself. Just like reading, writing and always curious about how things, nature, healing remedies and life works. I would always be grateful for my mom for doing those little things that now mean so much.

Now, in this generation we should be thankful for technology. The ability to communicate much faster, and our voice can be heard across many fields and communities better than before. We have different ways and techniques to utilize a mentality of recycle, reuse and reduce. We are way better than back then, which makes us the leaders of the future. As parents of the new generation, it is our duty to show our young ones how to live more sustainability, respect their home, animals, others and be mindful of their actions on this planet.

There are many things negative and not caring about our environment enough, has been taught since industrialization era, or even much older. Our parents are the byproduct of what their parents knew at the time and have decided to pass down to us. Simple.

We decide what goes align those lessons, according to our time frame. On this new decade, it’s where we can take our power back and show our kids, younger generation, which they will show their kids. (if they decide to have them in the next decade.) Yes, it’s a choice they will have to make if we are not changing patterns and living more sustainably.

We know that in order to change certain patterns, that do not align with who we are, and are meant to be in this lifetime. We must start by acknowledging, understanding the root, of the behaviour and why we act or why this triggers negative patterns. Then, take small and conscious steps towards positive change. The old patterns we want to let go will eventually become an afterthought and what we really want to do will align again with ourselves.

My community and my family where I’ve come from look at my actions (vegetarian and choosing minimalist lifestyle) and patterns that I’ve decided to change for myself and for the future generation I’m leaving behind. As if it’s ridiculous and because they don’t understand it, they reject and lashed out and give their “version” of what’s better path for me. However, their ideals are also constructed from families that also didn’t believe in changing and evolving as a sign of personal growth. They saw it as a rebellion and tried to “get the attention “.

Now, as I’m growing and learning to heal, as I’m dealing with grieving, raising my kids and trying to build my businesses. I’ve come to realize that there is a lot, I don’t know but I want to learn. And at the same time, as I’m learning, I’m teaching my girls, my people and my community by being the example. It definitely takes a lot of my energy, but it makes me feel a fullness in my heart and soul like no other. Being a healer but being able to also learn to heal yourself with the right support system. It’s an invaluable and priceless experience.

So this month, as I’m going through it all. I’m learning with my team that reading, writing and having a community support system it’s the way to grow. We are evolving and creating our first event of a lifetime very soon. For now, we here to talk about futuristic February. 💚♻️🌎

Lessons in the past 2 weeks of #letsgetzerowasted

    1. Consciousness of plastic consumerism and how to change to less plastic products companies. Ask yourself simple consumings questions. why do you need that specific brand product? can you find it online and save travel time?

    2. Be patient with yourself. One change per day or week. It’s not a marathon, it’s positive change progress. I tell the same thing to my writers. (Also, I tell myself because I’m my own worst critic.)

You need to let creativity be, you can’t rush creation. _AO

    3. Take a pic, document or write your progress or what you wish to improve.

    4. Keep a jar, reusable bags and things were to add your waste or your de- cluttered items. Keep one jar to remind you why you decided to do this and to show others how to embrace a sustainable lifestyle.

    5. Share your collection with your nearest people, family, friends, colleagues, then, share it with your community through social media. Help others embrace changing the negative patterns taught from the era of industrialization. We all can contribute to the #reducereuserecycle

Hope this helps and remember, one thing at time. I’m recognizing that my kids and me are serious polluters. Diapers, wipes, snacks, etc, waste is our middle name.

However, this is me and my family committing to change the pattern. You can do this, I know it can be a lot at first, but you will see it gets better. If you are on this journey this month, write on the comments how your journey is going. I love to hear from others taking their power back and making a change. Let’s work together and reduce our ecological footprint shall we?

¿Has hecho #futuristicfebruary?

This is huge! As a Dominican environmentalists @angiem_ao and someone who grew up around this area. Seen this 😭brought tears of joy! Also swipe left, 🤗 I’m sure this is a collective joy and a sign of hope for those who live around this river .

The Ozama River is heavily polluted. It is constantly affected by the slums on its shores and the factories that dump their waste into it. It is one of the main causes of pollution on the coastline of Santo Domingo. One of the many reason I’ve decided to be an #enviromentalscientist

It’s also one of the areas most affected right now with COVID-19 😔

So grateful @boyanslat and @theoceancleanup 🌻 for the work you do in keeping our 🌎 oceans clean and making sure that areas of the most marginalized communities living near rivers or the beach have less pollution = cleaner, educate locals which creates more sustainable conscious communities for the future generations. ✊🏾#betheexampleyouwanttosee 🌻

p.s: suggestions Samana is another city where 🐋 go to give birth every year. This area is heavily polluted too last time I was there. It will help to clean up so those mamas and their babies are healthy and less plastic in their stomachs 🙏🏽🐋💚

#simplereminders 🌎 This “has no value “unde #simplereminders 🌎 This “has no value “under capitalism also goes to:

❣️social and environmental Justice, indigenous rights, BLM, Trans, Latinos, LGBTQ+, Muslim, Asians, Jews, Arabic people, people living with disabilities, homeless, people dealing with mental illnesses, children, marginalized communities, parents with children w disabilities, women of color, BIPOC communities living in marginalized places. Essential workers, teachers, people delivering, groceries clerks, people living in apartments in horrible conditions but their lives are considered “non-essential “ by the system therefore cannot afford to move, nurses who work other jobs plus saving life’s in hospitals... any more to add to these list? 🤔

THESE ARE REAL PEOPLE. WITH REAL. STORIES.

#environmentalracism exist because of capitalism and white supremacy. OUR SUFFERING, OPPRESSION AND TRAUMAS DURING A WORLD PANDEMIC ARE NOT A CONSPIRACY. 😒

That’s why we need to work on abolition. Also, #abolishthepolice and #fundthecommunity ✊🏾

People who don’t have jobs and can’t afford housing and mental health support should be able to get these for free. What do you think 💭?

We need to STOP shaming people who are suffering right now instead of helping any way you can.

There are literally people comfortable in their home with everything paid for them. Shaming accounts who are voicing THE TRUTH and commenting “they deserve what they get” 🤬

White privilege also is rooted from capitalism and instead of using your privilege for good. You are being violent and creating more #inequality while most of us are trying to break this mental insanity created by greedy colonizers which most of these descended people are highly benefiting from.

We need to do better people. Because our lives 🌎 depends on it.

And save so you can send it to someone with privilege who says “they deserve it “ or “it is their fault” or the usual I hear everyone say to me when I speak about this. “You’re too much”, “stop caring so much” 🙄 “that’s not your problem. Why do you drain your energy on things that are not your concern anymore?” “You’re not homeless anymore are you?”

Yeah, that’s still a racial trauma I’m still working on healing and working really hard so I don’t end up in the streets again. 🙏🏽grateful for my family, friends and you 🌹 who are helping me so I can continue this work.

However, there are many people who don’t have family or friends to help them. Imagine being homeless through this winter and dealing with #policebrutality everyday.

Yep, let that sink in.

Very soon through the new website 💚🙏🏽 going to show you why it matters to care and help others. 🌻

We still are NOT going to just stay silent because it makes people uncomfortable 😒 Nah, they matter as much as all of us and f$&^ billionaires and toxic patriarchy leaders.

Watch out for those who gaslight, shame and blame yours or other BIPOC traumatic experiences. They are highly privileged, greedy people who benefit a lot from inequality and capitalism. 🤮

Most of us are still processing and healing racial Most of us are still processing and healing racial trauma and the shock of seen white supremacy and racism at work on January 6,2020 in the US.

However, just because is uncomfortable and seen the truth plus the reality that POC are dealing on a daily basis. Now, at night during lockdown “curfew” in Montreal, Quebec 🤦🏽‍♀️
we must speak about important matters. We don’t want to deal with bigger problems down the line.

Just like MLK 🖤✊🏾once said: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."

RP @climatestrikecanada ✊🏾💚
“from @wearenorth99 if we’re ever going to have climate justice, we must acknowledge the racist origins of the proud boys in so called “Canada” and how they continue to contribute to white supremacy across this land.”

This is something we are already experiencing in Quebec, Montreal with our white supremacist, racist and white privileged leaders. Their actions and decisions are really detrimental and silent violence that only people who are in the front line, essential workers, teachers, children, BIPOC communities, Women of color, Parents, Trans, LGBTQ+, homeless people and elderly are suffering the most. I would not be surprised these leaders of this city are very supportive of these groups. Stay conscious and pay attention. 🌻

We must not stay silent #canadians don’t think that what happen in the US cannot happen here. And they’re counting on your silence and complicit so they can continue their toxic behaviours. It has to end and it ends with all of us, not just some of us.
